By the end of the day, we had already made such a vast improvement to the house it started to look like a brand new home. We were able to replace all the windows, which made my turkey happy because he knew our mate would be warm tonight when she slept. A new roof was being put on the house; the old one had been missing shingles and was weak in other areas.
All the women had gotten together after one of the guys ran to the store, and they prepared us a feast of delicious burgers and hotdogs, everyone getting more than enough of their fill. Timmy kept Kiersten and Macie occupied playing hide-and-seek or anything else they wanted to play while we all worked.
A few times, I saw Kiersten shoot me awkward glances, probably afraid I would pick her up again. I almost did out of spite of those glances, but I used my better judgment for once and just left her alone. I would wear her down, eventually.
After Mom and Tabitha had disappeared into the house after I introduced them, they reemerged two hours later, but it seemed something had changed. Tabitha had more of a contemplative look on her face every time she saw one of us near Gabby, and I could have sworn I had seen a small smile on her face every time she caught one of us sneaking a kiss with Gabby.
I didnât know what Mom had said to her, but whatever it was, it obviously had her looking at all of us differently now.
Everyone had just finished packing up and were heading home. I knew we were going to be leaving too, though I really didnât want to leave my mate. Today was such a good day; I didnât want it to end. The only thing that made me happy was that we were going to see her again tomorrow, the day after that, and the one after that.
We were standing at the end of the driveway, my brothers and I encircling Gabby, keeping her warm between us. Once the sun went down, it got even colder out here.
âSo,â Gabby started, âI want to thank you guys for what youâve done for my family.â Tears glistened in her eyes as she looked between the three of us. âIt means so much to me that you would do this for me, for us.â
I pulled her into my arms, and she came willingly, my brothers closing in around us tighter. âWe would do anything for you and your family, pumpkin. Youâre our family too now, and so are they.â
I looked over her head, and Tank had a grin on his face, nodding his head in agreement.
âI donât want to go inside,â she murmured into my chest, âbut Iâm sure you guys are ready to get home.â
âI mean, I could sneak through your new window if you wanted,â I joked, but secretly, I hoped she would say yes. âOw,â I whined, pulling back and rubbing the back of my head.
